Introductory Episode

In our introductory episode, I am joined by Ian Faith, a business and marketing guru at Global Creative Group and host of several successful podcasts.

Ian: “Tim, thank you so much for having me. It’s great to join you on this journey. I’ve known you for many years and have seen iCoat grow and expand its offerings for distributors and tradespeople. I know you pour yourself into every deal every day. If you don’t mind, I have some questions so our audience can get to know you better. Who is Tim Phelps?”

Tim: “Well, I’m a father, a husband, a business owner with a couple of dogs. I’m a general contractor with over 20 years of experience in concrete coatings. My passion lies in teaching other contractors how to make money, grow their businesses, provide for their families, and explore new opportunities through innovative products and skill sets. That’s what I thrive on—helping people grow their businesses.”

Career Journey

Ian: “Twenty years is a long time in any industry. How did you get involved in this field?”

Tim: “I had an opportunity right after finishing school and completing my service in the Marine Corps. I took a job in Florida with a company that made stamped concrete tools and chemicals. They were focused on acid stains and stamped concrete but were not interested in expanding into coatings. My father is a chemical engineer, so I approached him with the idea of formulating our own products. We began developing a full line of decorative concrete coatings in the early nineties. Over the years, we’ve expanded into synthetic rock materials, concrete countertops, epoxy products, staining solutions, and more while maintaining our core offerings.”

Product Lines

Ian: “What are your main product lines? Can you give us more detail on your flooring options?”

Tim: “Certainly! Our concrete coatings remain our core product line. They can be applied over damaged floors for both interior and exterior use and can mimic various materials like slate tile or flagstone. We also offer a metallic epoxy system called Metal Illusion designed for interior use that can be customized in any color or shade.Additionally, we have a one-day stain product that allows for quick application without the environmental hazards associated with traditional acid stains. This product is particularly popular among businesses that cannot afford extended downtime.”

Differentiation

Ian: “What sets your products apart from other epoxy or concrete overlay systems?”

Tim: “As a contractor myself, I understand what it takes to make money without wasting labor days. Our primer dries quickly—within an hour—allowing for same-day application of the metallic system. Furthermore, we use a unique nano pigment tint system that offers an extensive range of colors compared to traditional pigmented mica powders.”

Training and Support

Ian: “I’ve heard about the attention to detail you provide your customers regarding training and guidance. Can you elaborate on that?”

Tim: “We offer training through several distributors across the country as well as in-person sessions in Phoenix and video training options online. Our goal is to help contractors quickly overcome learning curves so they can start making money as soon as possible.”

Target Audience

Ian: “Who is the ideal tradesman for your training programs?”

Tim: “Our primary focus is on concrete contractors since they already have jobs lined up. However, we also train drywallers and painters who pay attention to detail because precision is crucial in our industry.”

Tools Required

Ian: “What tools do people need to get started?”

Tim: “Most jobs require basic hand tools like trowels and buckets; specialty equipment isn’t necessary initially. For larger projects or interior metallic applications, some grinding equipment may be needed.”

Market Conditions

Ian: “Given the current economic climate, how do you see the market evolving over the next few years?”

Tim: “Historically, our products are recession-proof because even during downturns, people with disposable income will still invest in home improvements. The real contractors who specialize will thrive by differentiating themselves from competitors who may not have the same level of expertise.”

Getting Started

Ian: “How quickly can someone start making money if they begin today?”

Tim: “By following our system—creating samples for showrooms and doing initial projects at cost—you can be ready to go quickly. We’re here to assist throughout the process by providing feedback on your work.”This podcast aims to share insights into the decorative concrete industry while empowering contractors with knowledge that leads to success in their businesses.
